Flood alleviation

After the first part of the flood alleviation work on Manor Farm was completed last year, the County have now started working on the bridge in Church Road.

They will first deepen and widen the original channel then insert 5 large concert culverts, the road will then be lowered from the Causeway so water does not run along by Gould's Farm. Keep visiting for the latest photos and a full report from the engineer in charge.

Milborne St Andrew Golf Day 2002-09-03 cont

The ultimate winners however has to be the Village and its football club who will benefit from the £1450 raised.

This sum goes towards the running of the senior team and also enables the many youngsters of the village to enjoy quality coaching on a weekly basis. Qualified Football coaches all of whom have also gone through the police vetting process before working with children lead this. In addition to FA coaching courses First aid and Child protection   courses have also been attended.

The success of this years Golf day will ensure the whole process will evolve further.

The Football Club would like to thank the many sponsors both from within the village and across the county. Their generosity plus the efforts of nearly 70 golfers on the day ensured a great success.

Behind the scenes a dedicated team of Milborne villagers have worked for months to ensure the organisation of the day went smoothly.

Plans are already in hand \For Golf 2003.

The target is not necessarily to overtake the £1450, but to ensure that all involved consider the Golf day is a worthwhile enjoyable community building experience that reflects real value for all concerned.

Ps New members are welcome to both the senior Football and youth. For further information contact John Kane 837108 or Danny Gardiner 837010

Dorset Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Cycle Ride – Saturday, 14th September

This will take place on Saturday, 14th September. The idea is to cycle to as many churches as possible between 10 am and 6 pm. Sponsorship can be a lump sum or an amount per church visited. Although it is called a cycle ride participants can also walk, or go on horseback. Apparently one year somebody visited several coastal churches by boat!

If you walk or cycle you can be taken to your first church and collected from your last but obviously in between motorised vehicles are not allowed. All the money raised is shared equally between the Historic Churches Trust and the church of your choice.

Provided the weather is reasonable it is great fun. Most of the churches provide squash and biscuits for weary travellers and, of course, you can visit as few or as many churches as you time and energy permit.

Is anyone interested?

If so, contact one of the following for full details and a sponsor form:

Milborne Man in High Sea Drama

Matthew who obtained an honours degree in Marine geography at Cardiff University was working on a survey boat in the Arabian Sea. He awoke at 6am on Wednesday morning to the sound of the ships alarm, on making his way to the rescue station he quickly realised this was not a practice drill. Wearing shorts and T-shirt the order was giving to abandon ship, with no time to retrieve personal belongings.

Once on board the rescue ship Matthew and his fellow scientists then watched as the American navy on duty in the nearby Gulf attempted to pump the ships rapidly submerging hold. Unfortunately the ship could not be saved.

The rescue ship landed him in the port of Muscat in Oman from where he was flown to Heathrow.

Relived parents John and Joyce Kane commented, “ We are just glad to have back safe and sound.”

I was delighted to have a guided tour of the latest village improvement initiative and was pleasantly  surprised at the four spacious changing rooms and storage facilities.  Although scaffolding is very apparent at this stage, it is possible to envisage how the sports lounge, with its all round glazing and veranda, will be well used for comfortably observing those enthusiastically energetic members of the community !!

HOME WATCH?

Home watch is a ring-round system in which participants are required to pass messages to the next member on their list.

Messages will originate from the police and/or Peter Dow to coordinator and it has been used to good effect on a number of occasions recently. Within a twinkling of an eye, when the car park at lane end was illegally occupied recently a message whizzed round and I for one locked up my daughters.

If you should be aware of anything that could be suspicious, call the POLICE on 01929 462727 (or 999 if an emergency) and our intrepid coordinator on 837500.

acberlin.gif (28803 bytes) Amphicars

Well, David informs me that in 1987 he bought the black Amphicar registration NMU10E in an auction in Dorset , the previous owner lived around the Milborne area. It has now been fully restored and is painted red. Do you have any information about this car or do you remember it been driven around the local villages.

David now runs his own website all about Amphicars if you have any information about his car or are interested please visit his web site, www.amphicars.com.

The Amphicar was recently used to rescue people in the floods in David’s local village.
